Involved in an Accident? Here’s What You are Required to Do Before You Drive Away

It was a hectic Monday morning: you slept through the alarm, the kids didn’t want to get up and go to school, and now you’re at risk for getting into work late. To make matters worse, traffic seems to be moving even slower than usual.

All of this was on your mind as you made your way down Route 66. Just as you were thinking about how you hoped your boss wasn’t coming in until later, traffic suddenly came to a stop. Fortunately, you were able to brake before the bumper of your car had a meeting with the back bumper of the car in front of you. The same cannot be said, however, for the truck behind you—he was not able to stop in time and collided with your car.

As you attempted to pull over so that you could exchange information, the truck moved over too, but instead of stopping on the shoulder, he took the next exit and sped away.

Your Legal Obligation After an Accident

When you are involved in a traffic accident you are legally obligated to complete a few tasks before leaving the scene of the accident, and they are:

  • To stop as close to the scene as possible, without obstructing traffic.
  • Reporting your name, address, drivers’ licenses numbers, injuries, vehicle registration number, and other similar information to the other person involved in the accident, and law enforcement. If you are unable to locate the person in the vehicle immediately, you’ll need to make reasonable efforts to do so.
  • Provide reasonable assistance to any person injured in the accident.
